Charlene Richard was a Cajun girl who had a great love for others. She was born on January 13, 1947. She lived an ordinary Cajun life. She lived in Richard, Louisiana. She attended church in Church Point, Louisiana at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She loved sports and played basketball. Her teacher commented that Charlene was not quite herself after she began seeing a ghost like appearance of a woman in black. Her mother took her to her doctor and she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. She offered up her suffering daily after the chaplain at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana suggested her suffering could benefit others if she offered it up. She died two weeks after being diagnosed on August 11, 1959. She was buried at St. Edwards Catholic Church Cemetery in Richard, Louisiana. Many visit her tomb each year. I am a Cajun-Creole grandmother who was raised in South Central Louisiana and I am trying to preserve my culture as well as the things I imagine. My Primitive Folk Art preserves the simple way of life that I love. I love my culture and the place where I live and I want to share it!! Watching over my father's shoulder is how I learned to paint. He did primitive folk art for local shops. I took several art classes in college as well as private lessons from some of Acadiana's finest artist beginning when my oldest child was in kindergarten.
