During a very rough time in my life I was reading the Bible. I was looking for courage. I was reading the Gospel of John. I was reading about Jesus crucifixion. John 19:26-27 leapt out at me. I wanted to be "the disciple whom Jesus loved." I wanted to take Mary as my mother. I searched for more Bible quotes on Mary being the mother of faithful Christians. I read the story of Mary in the twelfth chapter of the Book of Revelation. I read how the dragon stood before her as she was about to give birth to Jesus in Revelation 12:4-5. I read about the war between the Angels and the dragon. I read how after this battle the dragon went to pursue Mary. I read how earth helped Mary and how "Then the dragon became angry with the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep GOD's commandments and bear witness to JESUS." Rev. 12:17.
It was Mother Mary as warrior that I sought to capture in this painting. I feel she is the most courageous lady to ever live.
I am a Cajun-Creole grandmother who was raised in South Central Louisiana and I am trying to preserve my culture as well as the things I imagine. My Primitive Folk Art preserves the simple way of life that I love. I love my culture and the place where I live and I want to share it!! Watching over my father's shoulder is how I learned to paint.
