Description
Mama parents were share croppers in Acadiana when cotton was a popular crop. Mama loved picking cotton. Mama missed her parents after they died,, especially around Christmas. Mom decided to decorate a Christmas tree in their honor. She debated on several different types. She decided to dig up a whole cotton plant and decorate it with hand strung garland, candy canes, and a corn husk angel to top it. Under the tree she placed things to remind her of her parents. A little nativity scene she bought on a shopping trip she had gone on after Christmas one year with her mama. Each statue had a price tag under it of 25 cents. Like her parents Mama grew cushaw squash and she always had a large one under the tree. Mama said it was a good year for cotton if new shoes were bought so a pair could be found under the tree. Her mama made rag dolls and new bonnets for her daughters so Mama made them to go under her tree. Her daddy often carved little toys and made sling shots so Mama made some to go under her tree. Mama told me store bought peppermint candy was always a special treat. She made sure to get some for her tree. Mama's little cotton Christmas tree taught me and my children so much about what true treasures are. I painted Mama's Cotton Christmas Tree to preserve the history of Mama's tree for my own grandchildren so that they can tell their own grandchildren about a simpler time.
