Artist's Description
This beautiful antique statue was described to me as a young child by my Maw-Maw who spoke French to me who spoke very few words of French. Her great love for this staue as she described it was so beautiful. It was my First Communion Day and I got my mother to interpret for us. She wanted me to be like Mary in this portrayal of her in this statue. My Maw-Maw wanted me to give my heart to Jesus just as she believed Mary did. This statue was captured for St. Joseph's Altar at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Opelousas, Louisiana.

I am a Cajun-Creole grandmother who was raised in South Central Louisiana and I am trying to preserve my culture as well as the things I imagine. My Primitive Folk Art preserves the simple way of life that I love. I love my culture and the place where I live and I want to share it!! Watching over my father's shoulder is how I learned to paint.
