Description
This heart shaped girl is the first of the folk art faces that my father taught me to paint. It is still my favorite. I have painted lots of these faces but no two look alike. My grandmother who would be 130 years old told me that this face was very popular when she was young, I spent a week with her when I was a young girl. She sketched several for me. She played a little game with me and sung a little song in French. She tapped her hand then mine with each syllable and when the end of the stanza finished whoever's hand had last been tapped was the one who drew the next part on the face. Each pearl on necklaces could be considered a turn. Each of the parts of the eye or nostrils of the nose could be turns also. My children studied the Dance Rounds popular with the Cajuns in school. These dances are often called Lenten Games and the songs are similar in rhythm to the song grandma sung to me. The teacher was unfamiliar with the song although she had seen the face and knew their was a game that went with it. It was said "the person who draws the last part to the face is said to fall in love first." Some of the designs could go on indefinitely if the kids playing it feared "falling in love."
