Artist's Description
Persecution In Acadiana tells the story of a young artist who was often punished for speaking French and drawing. Today being bilingual is thought to be an asset but for years speaking French In school was a punishable offense. During this time art was not taught in school. They focused on three subjects: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic.
Although French is taught in school today, children with strong Cajun French accent are often required or strongly encouraged to go to Specht Therapy to speak more like other Americans.

About Seaux-N-Seau Soileau
I am a Cajun-Creole grandmother who was raised in South Central Louisiana and I am trying to preserve my culture as well as the things I imagine. My Primitive Folk Art preserves the simple way of life that I love. I love my culture and the place where I live and I want to share it!! Watching over my father's shoulder is how I learned to paint. He did primitive folk art for local shops. I took several art classes in college as well as private lessons from some of Acadiana's finest artist beginning when my oldest child was in kindergarten. I learned several techniques and styles. I am now grandmother to ten grandchildren. I have been selling my folk art for almost as many years as I have been a mother. When capturing the culture of the...

F/L. I feel as if any time culture is threatened it is a bad thing. We are a country that should embrace al cltures, revel in their differences. We should also love and keep our own, personal, cultures and customs. Acceptance and appreciation will enrich all of us as long as it flows in all directions.
Seaux-N-Seau Soileau replied:
I agree. I'm so thankful that they now offer French Immersion in schools in Louisiana. Cajun and Creole French languages are being preserved through various groups. My grandchildren know only a few phrases and words. I'm hoping that as more schools offer French we can regain more of our culture.

That's quite the memory! I'd love to be bilingual. l/f
Seaux-N-Seau Soileau replied:
Me too, Kay. I can understand and speak a little French, but because my parents were punished at school for speaking French, they only started speaking French to us after we graduated.
