Artist's Description

The traditional New Orleans' Mardi Gras royalty meets the traditional Cajun/Creole Courir de Mardi Gras. NOLA contributes tokens for Mamou's Community Gumbo.

The two Louisiana traditions are extremely different. New Orlean's Mardi Gras has participants dressed in royal clothing costing thousands of dollars and throwing out necklaces, gold colored coins, fancy shoes and other royal gifts. Mask are made of porcelain, ceramic, resin, or paper mache. Participants go to balls and parade down the streets on beautifully decorated floats. While in Mamou, Louisiana participants wear colorful costumes most often decorated with cotton fabric that has been cut into fringes. Mask are made of screen that has been painted in folk art style with simple geometric shapes and trimmed with fabric. Large stuffed noses are attached to the mask. Tall pointed caps with skirts to cover the hair are also worn Participants go from house to house begging for ingredients for a gumbo on horseback or ride...

I am a Cajun-Creole grandmother who was raised in South Central Louisiana and I am trying to preserve my culture as well as the things I imagine. My Primitive Folk Art preserves the simple way of life that I love. I love my culture and the place where I live and I want to share it!! Watching over my father's shoulder is how I learned to paint. He did primitive folk art for local shops. I took several art classes in college as well as private lessons from some of Acadiana's finest artist beginning when my oldest child was in kindergarten.
