Description
This Mardi Gras beggar is begging for pennies to help fund the gumbo supper for his community to celebrate the Courir de Mardi Gras. He points to the center of his palm. This is a common gesture they beggars of the Courir de Mardi Gras use. This tradition can be found in many communities in the Acadiana area of Louisiana. These costumes are rich in a variety of colors unlike costumes of Mardi Gras in larger cities which often only use purple, green, and gold. The large pointed hats are called "capuchons." The screen mask dates back 150 years and are painted up in a very simple style using basic geometric shapes. The youngest child has a coin that she is waving as she is eager to give. The middle age child has her hands in her pocket showing a willingness to give. The older boy has his hand on his pocket as if securing his wallet in his pocket for fear the beggar will touch his heart.
