Description
Hay rakes such as this were common farm equipment before gasoline and diesel powered tractors revolutionize the farming industry. In Acadiania many of my neighbors who ran small farms were still using these horse drawn hay rakes as late as the 1980's. This hay take is part of Le Vieux Village which is located in Opelousas, Louisiana. The village attracts many tourists who are interested in the lives of Cajuns and Creoles who settled Acadiana.
I chose to capture the hay rake just behind a Magnolia tree. The leaves with their brown furry backs give the image a uniquely southern charm. A nineteenth century outhouse can be seen to the left of the hay rake. It was built in 1890. It was originally located in the community of Prairie Rhonde, Louisiana.
