Description
The Courir de Mardi Gras is the most colorful celebration. Because it is held in winter everything around the participants and the chickens they try to capture seems to be gray. The Courir de Mardi Gras is a centuries old held the day before Ash Wednesday. Participants ride horseback through rural communities in south central Louisiana collecting ingredients for a community gumbo. They sign and dance to entertain the homeowners along the way in hopes that they will throw out to them the prize ingredient, a live chicken. The masked and brightly costumed participants chase and capture the chicken which also adds to the entertainment.
