Paintings, pictures, & various art forms celebrating the Courir de Mardi Gras by that old Seaux N. Seau. The Courir de Mardi Gras is a Cajun Creole celebration of Mardi Gras in Rural south central to south western Louisiana. Colorfully dressed costumed riders led by a plain clothed caped rider called the captain rides through villages and small towns collecting ingredients for a community gumbo. The captain approaches the house and ask if the Mardi Gras would be welcome. If they would The Captain waves his flag and the Mardi Gras sings and dances. They are often accompanied by musicians. They hope to earn a large amount of ingredients to feed the anticipated crowd at the gumbo. The prize ingredients are the live chickens that some farmers throw out. The participants must chase and capture the chicken. The chicken chase and capture also entertains the crowd. I was taught by my grandmothers to make the costumes. My paternal grandmother taught me to make the mask and hat and my maternal grandma taught me to make the costumes. My parents taught me Cajun and Creole Folk Art.
