About Seaux-N-Seau Soileau
I am a Cajun-Creole grandmother who was raised in South Central Louisiana and I am trying to preserve my culture as well as the things I imagine. My Primitive Folk Art preserves the simple way of life that I love. I love my culture and the place where I live and I want to share it!! Watching over my father's shoulder is how I learned to paint. He did primitive folk art for local shops. I took several art classes in college as well as private lessons from some of Acadiana's finest artist beginning when my oldest child was in kindergarten. I learned several techniques and styles. I am now grandmother to ten grandchildren. I have been selling my folk art for almost as many years as I have been a mother. When capturing the culture of the people of Acadiana, I feel the primitive folk art that I learned from my father is the best technique. Many people ask me how to say my name. I was nicked named "Sew and Sew" when I was in school because of my love for the textile arts. There were several people with my birth name and many more with various forms of it. So I was given the name "Sew and Sew." As I began painting I thought it looked a bit strange on paintings so I gave it a French spelling because of my Cajun/ Creole background. The first "Seaux" has the letter "x" this was commonly used by Acadians who did not know how to write. The last "Seau" does not. I have relatives with last names ending in the "eau" and the "eaux". I wanted to honor both of them in spelling my nick name which I sign on the majority of my paintings. Many of my original paintings are studio wrapped on large three dimensional canvases and my signature may have been put at the bottom side at the commissioner's request or my own preference. Thank you for visiting!!!!
